These
recent “empty nesters” wanted a unique feel, a space with enough
vitality to keep them invigorated while remaining relaxing, and with
enough working space and storage for all their bathroom needs. The
addition of space from the nearby main bathroom created significant
opportunities in the master. The theme incorporated a combination of
circles and squares in which round walls, handles, and faucets were
combined with glass square tiles, a square sink, squares in windows and
hardware. The theme also reflects a combination of symmetry and
irregularity. By balancing the right amount of whimsy with the benefits
of strong patterns and repeating themes, the room becomes exciting while
remaining calm. The husband, a musician, remarked that their new
bathroom reminds him of a jazz song; the underlying rules and order are
clear and definable, while the improvisations in the room provide a
feeling of the spontaneous.
