Facelift
"Can you do something to
save the porch?" A simple question, but not an easy answer. After a
thorough investigation, it was determined that the porch on this 1901
home was a loss and had to be replaced. The roof of the main house
extended out over the porch area, and was in danger of collapse if the
porch supports failed. To add to the dilemma; there was stone added from
an earlier renovation to the gable; termite eaten sills and no footings.
The first step was to build four sets of temporary walls to support the
main ceiling and roof system so nothing would move when the remainder of
the porch and columns were removed. The new porch was created to
maintain the craftsman style, but not appear to be a copy of other
porches in the neighborhood. I think one of the more interesting aspects
of this award is that in a category with no top limit on budget…an award
was presented to a project costing less than $17,000.
