The owners of this 18th
century colonial wanted a highly functional and interesting space. The
original early 1800’s timber frame was exposed and cleaned up and the
second floor space above was removed to relieve the cramped ceiling
height. The flooring was reclaimed beech from a factory in New Bedford
with the scars from machinery wheels left in to reflect the wood’s
natural patina. The plaster was tinted with dry pigment and sealed with
three coats of clear finish. The perimeter counters are concrete etched
with layers of different color acid washes. The cabinetry was painted by
a decorative painter showing texture and a layered color technique. the
backsplashes are tile murals in the style of mid 18th century painter
Rufus Porter. Overlooking the kitchen is a home office balcony that
gives visitors an overview of the activity and vibrancy of the overall
space below. This project is stunning in it’s artistic and colorful
detail. Every surface has been thoughtfully designed and crafted.
