The
project includes an expansive kitchen accommodating cooking, casual
dining and entertaining, as well as a relocated side entry and a
mudroom. Also included is a hearth room located in the space of the
earlier kitchen. The location of the driveway limited the width and the
street-front exposure demanded great care in the design of the exterior.
One of the most important goals was the integration of the addition with
the historic home. The stone, stucco, slate, leaded glass windows and
the wood trim details of the addition all match those on the exterior of
the original house. The windows of the bay are composed to compliment
the existing windows. The similarities between the gabled roof of the
addition and the exiting attic gable visually link the addition with the
original structure. The inset paneled doors of the glazed cabinetry and
the recycled beams from the family’s barn support this goal of
integration with the original house. The materials selected, the design
of the individual project components, and the setting all contribute to
this addition that, while responding to the needs of contemporary life,
is fully a part of the fabric of this historic home.
