2010 Best Addition Under $100,000
The
owners wanted an enlarged kitchen with an open configuration and
step-saving efficient floorplan. The plan called for an architecturally
sympathetic 12’ X 10’ breakfast room addition with a south facing bay
window that would seamlessly integrate into the existing elevation.
Throughout the project, challenges turned into opportunities. The need
to eliminate a bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen inspired
the use of three wooden posts as vertical support shafts for a pair of
load bearing microlam beams installed flush to the ceiling. The posts
were turned into Doric columns and form an arch that lends formality to
the space while creating an ambiance appropriate for the owner’s
antiques, oriental carpets and other fine furnishings.
