For
this family and their physically challenged son, the question was how to
apply aspects of Universal Design to make the son’s functioning in their
home optimal for him-both now and in the future. For them, it was all
about function. The family just bought a new townhouse and wanted to
make the bathroom work for their son and provide access to the lower
level, where the son’s bedroom and family room are located. The
solutions included: An elevator to access the lower level, replacing 30”
doors with 36” doors to the son’s bathroom, replacing the existing
vanity in the bath with an ADA approved wall mounted sink, the
installation of custom-located grab bars, and the installation of a Toto
Washlet toilet that replaces the need for toilet paper.
