2002 Best Room Addition Over
$100,000
The objective was to
replace a cramped powder bath with a full bath that maximizes natural
light and views. This was achieved by constructing a dormer from what
had been crawl space storage. The project also tied into the enclosure
of an existing balcony to achieve a bonus room. The delighting scheme
incorporates a bank of double hung windows that look out into the
treetops. Two skylights supply overhead light and a raised oval window
frames the view of a neighboring park and lagoon. The solution for
exterior appearance and continuity was based on the notion that the
dormer needed to appear light, contrasting with the visually heavier
brick base. This was achieved by pulling the dormer walls back from the
perimeter of the base. In addition, the unique slope to the existing
roofline was mimicked in the dormer’s form, both outside and in.
